Do we really want Jesse LIngard back?

Mate is a Man United fan. Lingard was discussed as his name has been in the papers, connected with a return to the London Stadium.

He was adamant Jesse Lingard would be a poor signing for West Ham.

But surely his nine goals and four assists in just 16 games in his last spell for us, made it worth the punt, I said?

However, this Manure fan was convinced that Lingard was keen to get back into the Man United squad last time - hence his motivation to pull on the Hammers' shirt and score goals.

With that incentive gone, Lingard will be a pale shadow of his former glory.

Furthermore, the massive wage bill he commands will be an albatross round the club's neck.

What's your view on this .... do you want him back to score goals and liven up our attack?

Or will he be a massive overpaid turkey - the kind of bloated salary Newcaslte can easily afford to have on the books rather than us?

I’d like it if he did come, won’t be upset if he don’t.

Lean, not played that many games over his career and naturally fit so his age and 3 year contract don’t bother me.

It’s his motivation that is in question.

He’ll definitely give us more than Vlasic and we paid £30m for him.

A proven player from a top premier league club at still a reasonable age for 3m sign on and £100k per week isn’t the biggest gamble in this day and age.

Yarma picked up a reported £115k per week I know who I’d rather pay.

Pretty much my thoughts, Jacket. Everyone pulling out the old 'its his boyhood club, I understand why he wanted to fight for his place' bollocks. He was there for all that time, and he's barely ever been a regular for a significant amount of time, if he really wanted to play football he would've pushed for a move last summer.

Id' have him If he came back hungry and on a wage which reflects his role in a Man Utd team for the past few years.
At the moment he's no more than another Dele Alli. I was disappointed he didn't come back this season. He could have tried to continue that form and get into the England squad. Instead he chose to rot and look for a big payday on a free.

That to me says he is more interested in money than playing football. If he really wanted to come here, he could have even bought himself out his contract in the last year.

I'm not sure he can reproduce that form again once on a long term deal and he could become an expensive player on the wage bill that isn't a regular and we can't shift.

On reasonable wages yes, if not then Fábio Vieira of Porto, Kang In Lee of Mallorca, Matheus Nunes of Sporting, Ricardo Horta of Braga and Mikkel Damsgaard of Sampdoria are all very decent Lingard alternatives

Can't believe that the only thing that could motivate him to play well is the chance to get into the Man U team.

But then I'm not an idiot Man U fan, who thinks the World begins and ends with Man U.

You're unlikely to succeed in football unless you love the game itself. A few exceptions exist, but they are very much that - exceptions.

If we can get shot of vlasic for a few quid and get lingard in on not vastly different wages its a definite massive upgrade but the jury is still out for me. Firstly he was excellent in his first 7/8 games then was dreadful in the next 7/8. My biggest worry is he seems to put a lot more energy into his commercial interests than his football career and seems happy to sit on his arse collecting his dough, now how much of that is down to him and how much is down to Man Utd we’ll never know tbf but at his age he should of been kicking the managers door down and I didn’t get the impression that was the case seemed happy to pick his hundred bags up a week for doing fuck all and get a big fat contract for being a free agent which has cost him another year of his career.
To sum up I think he’d be a decent signing and will strengthen the squad but I wouldn’t be gutted if he chose the barcodes or spuds over us or we decided to go down another route.

True, he's never been a consistent regular starter so he won't have the usual miles on the clock. Doesn't seem to have bothered him much, not regularly starting matches.

He would be a great addition to the squad.

It’s great to buy young and potential but that generally is so their value can increase and the club can sell them - so actually not that great really.

Signing Lingard on a free until he is 32 years old sounds like a winner. It isn’t 1976 and players are not knackered at 32.

I would have paid the £20 million we were desperate for more attacking options all season.

We would have earnt the £10 million extra back and I'm not sure we wouldn't have paid it if given the chance.. Moyes loves him remember and doesn't like spending money on strikers..

True, and who knows if we could have got him in or not but we obviously (and quite rightly) were never going to pay 20m for a 29 yo in the last year of their contract... just saying with hindsight it wouldn't have been ridiculous!

We never made a bid and he's never turned us down.

Yet I keep reading we should have paid what they want and he had his chance. Neither are consistent with the other and I've seen no proof that either thing happened, other than fans have posted on the Internet.

With the benefit of hindsight we should have paid the 20m it would have taken to get Lingard last summer... instead we got Vlasic for 30m as the better long term prospect and I for one was happy with that.

Likely to offload Vlasic this summer and could easily take a 15m hit so Lingard would have been the better bet at no additional cost and would quite probably have secured 6th or higher for us had we had him all season.

Not saying I necessarily want him now, certainly not if he has ridiculous wage demands... Lewis Potter would be the better long term investment IMO.

Bissaka, Maguire and Sancho cost a combined 200 mil, which is a great example of English players being overpriced.

Good point Mexy. It's a strange thing that's happened to them, with all of that spending power in the transfer market, massive reputation in the game, and big name players on the books, and yet they were fortunate to finish 7th in the end.

There aren't many bigger names in football than Ronaldo, Pogba, Cavani, even Rashford and De Gea, maybe. The odd thing is how they have managed to fail to keep up at the top, through making a series of poor moves. You'd have to start at manager, even Mourinho wasn't measuring up. Van Gaal wasn't good enough, It was only a matter of time before OGS got found out, Rangnick looked all at sea eventually as well.

But the core of the problem is recruitment, and they'd made plenty of shit moves. Mata and Matic, Cavani, Ronaldo, were all past their shelf life and have produced less than they were worth. They've paid through the nose for Wan Bissaka, Maguire and the biggest joke of all, Sancho. That's given a rotten core to the side, which has been difficult for a manager to address and overcome. Now their ageing, last pay day strollers are out of contract and leaving, the rebuilding job is that much bigger.

What a sad set up ManU have become where they keep players that they don't use to stop them playing for other teams that are challenging their position in the league.
All part of their plan to secure 6th.

Man U were vindicated in not selling him to us. Few goals from him over the season would have put us above them.

He clearly has a bit more about him in terms of finishing than the rest of our front line.

For our squad now I’d take him, but who knows who else we are looking at.

I often thought during the season just gone that we could have done with his speed and finishing. But I'm thinking about his first few games for us. The latter part of his time with us he didn't do much. I'm not against signing him, but I'm not too fussed either way.
